Step 1 | No Dust

Make sure you keep dust particles off of your tiles by sweeping regularly. If the dust settles in, it will make your tiles look older than they are (especially wood-look tiles). On wood-look tiles, dust gets stuck between grooves where broom bristles can't reach. Try using a degreaser  applied with a rough cloth and floor polisher (spot test before use). After that, rinse the floor of any residue and then dry with a microfiber cloth. If the tiles aren’t significantly dusty, you can dilute the cleaner with a higher percentage of water.

Step 2 | Clean Up Spills and Dirt ASAP!

To keep your tiles like new even after accidents, clean spills as soon as they happen. Use a mop or cloth with hot water mixed with a mild house detergent (spot test before use). For the mildest and safest cleaning solution for almost every tile, mix a cup of vinegar for every gallon of water. (Do not use vinegar or chemicals on marble tiles.) This is a highly effective and odor-eliminating cleanser that is perfect as a toxic-free alternative. Open windows as you clean with the water and vinegar solution to air out the scent.

Step 3 | Clean Grout Lines

Grout lines are typically white but are available in a variety of colors. Over time, grout lines can age due to exposure to the elements or everyday messes. Dirty grout lines will take away from your tiles’ beauty, so it is important to take care of them as well. When you initially grout the tile, make sure there is a sealant on them to create a protective layer. This will keep out dirt, dust, stains, and water from penetrating through to the grout. It is recommended to apply a sealant twice a year after the tiles are installed. However, different tiles may have different sealing schedules depending on the manufacturer.

If there is dirt already stuck on your grout line, use a hydrogen peroxide and water solution in equal parts. Brush the grout line with a tooth brush to remove stains. You can also use baking soda to brighten tiles. Make a baking soda paste by mixing it with water and then applying it with a toothbrush. For tougher stains, let the baking soda paste sit for a few minutes and then scrub. For small sections of stained grout, try rubbing a clean white or pink pencil eraser over the stain until it disappears.

Step 4 | Prevent and Remove Mildew

Due to moisture, bathroom tiles tend to acquire mildew over time. To prevent mildew, air out the room after you shower by opening windows and keep the floors dry by wiping them. If you already have mildew, prepare a water and ammonia solution of equal parts. Put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands and open windows for ventilation. Scrub the area using a soft brush or scrub with the 50/50 water and ammonia solution. Rinse the floor after the mildew is gone.  Please be careful with chemical solutions as they can be harmful if not used properly. Always read and pay attention to the warnings on the labels and follow the instructions carefully.

Step 5 |  Marble Maintenance

Marble is a beautiful stone that is classically used for floors, walls, countertops, and other surfaces. They are a soft and delicate stone that need to be cleaned frequently. Basic maintenance of marble requires a little patience, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

Protect marble from scratches by not placing sharp edged objects directly on the stone. For marble floors, use padding under the legs of chairs and tables. Use coasters or mats for counter tops. Use natural, light, and chemical-free marble cleaner for tough stains. However, do not let the stone stay wet. Dry it immediately after the stain has been removed.  Do not use chemicals or vinegar on marble because it will damage the tile. However, you can use hydrogen peroxide for very light-colored marble. For shiny marble, use chamois cloths that dries and shines simultaneously.
