You might think of Gatsby when you hear the words “Art Deco,” but there’s more to this style than the famed New Yorker. Its popularity reached its height in the 1920’s and ‘30s with its signature aesthetic that evokes glamorous luxury. By using rich colors with bold and decadent detail, you can have an updated version of the roaring twenties for your own space.

1 | Geometric Lines

Geometric Lines were always a thing and they will help get you the Gatsby look in a hot second. The signature fan/shell pattern was ubiquitous during this era, so incorporating them is an easy way to create the Art Deco vibe. As long as you combine simple lines with antique décor, you will achieve this style.

Another pattern that is synonymous with this aesthetic are those with intricate lines that are reminiscent of Aztec patterns. This pattern in white or gold color on a dark background creates a dramatic effect that adds a glamorous flare. Picture it on a large-scale mirror.

2 | Exotic Deco

Thanks to international traveling becoming more accessible during the 1920’s, people were able to explore more exotic places and, consequently, more exotic styles. Popular travel adventures like Egyptian safaris had a heavy influence on the Art Deco movement and made animal products a highly sought-after commodity. Tortoise shells, zebra hides, ivory, and exotic finishes became the go-to for a global look. Add a sunburst style lighting to top off the look.

3 | Fluidity

Fluidity made this theme unique with its organic and wavy lines. It’s a nod to nature and touches on biological themes. You can use this shape for statement pieces such as an opulent gold colored lighting and a matching table to have a cohesive theme. Pair the statement pieces with neutral beige and natural home decor like chairs and couches. You can also use organic shapes in wall art to continue the theme.

4 | Opulence /Glamour

This wouldn’t be Art Deco without some decadence added to it. Think gold, brass, pearl, and lustrous finishes. Anywhere you can apply it, go for it. Lighting is an effortless way to add glamour to any room. Brass finished wall lamps on both sides of the mirror combined with that fan/shell pattern for the wallpaper creates a fancy bathroom. For the living room, brass lighting works. However, a matching railing just puts the cherry on top.

5 | Bold with Contrast

Make a statement with bold contrasts and colors. This period is all about personality and you can use contrasting shades to convey that. Black and white portraits of 1920’s celebrities make a great focal point, while adding blue gives the whole room the perfect color balance. Use rich woods for seating and flooring. Add plants for a personal touch.
