It is said that our space shapes us as much as we shape our space. This principle highlights the importance of interior design. Good design, however, doesn’t just happen. In fact, with so many styles to choose from and elements to consider -- layout, color scheme, decor, to name a few -- the possibility of ending up with bad design is rather high. And that’s why people work with a professional interior designer.
So, how do you choose a design pro for your interior design project? A good starting point is getting to know about them. To that end, we are compiling a blog series called ‘Interior Designer Spotlight’ which will showcase talented designers in different cities. First up is Miami interior designer Darla Powell of Darla Powell Interiors. Read on to learn more about one of the rising stars in Miami’s design scene.
What inspired you to become an interior designer?
Darla: As a child, I was OBSESSED with decorating. I would rearrange the furniture in my room weekly. I was the only kid on the block with oil paintings in her treehouse. (Snuck from my Mom’s stash). I grew up getting dragged to antique and décor stores and I guess it stuck!
What is your design philosophy or mantra?
Darla: I prefer to keep things simple. Although I can totally appreciate a maximalist sensibility and the beauty of it done well, my mind needs negative space and non-clutter. I also HAVE to have some organic elements in my designs. The warmth of wood or the greenery of indoor plants, etc.
What do you love most about your job?
Darla: When my clients say, “Oh my Gosh. I had no idea that would look so good. You were totally right!” I always tell them “I know” and we have a good laugh.
How would you describe Miami style? / What defines it?
Darla: Miami has a ton of outdoor living year round so incorporating that outdoor space to transition seamlessly to the indoor space is very Miami. Miami style also tends to have that more modern feel in general.
What do you see as the advantages and challenges that are unique to the Miami market?
Darla: Advantages are year round entertaining! Who doesn’t love that? Poolside décor? Yes, please! Disadvantages – hurricanes, sand and hot weather. These things can take a toll on your homes, flooring, and collections.
What is your favorite space to work on?
Darla: I LOVE doing home theaters. I am a total A/V geek. Bet you didn’t see that coming!
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Darla: I love working out, running and then I love to put all the calories right back in by trying out new restaurants. I am totally into listening to podcasts as well. I love that I can multitask and enjoy them at the same time. When I have time, I will read an actual book (which isn’t often).
What are your top tips for a kitchen makeover?
Darla: Stay away from being too trendy! Kitchens are so crazy expensive and if you get too trendy, you will kick yourself in 5 years. Maybe less. Pick quality cabinetry and counters that will last. They may appear to cost more but you will actually be saving those Benjamins by not having to tear out the cheap stuff in a few years.
What are your top tips for a bathroom makeover?
Darla: Make it functional. Consider the layout and how your space will actually be used for you and your family. Again, NOT TOO TRENDY. This is another expensive space. Unless you can afford to change it every 5 years. Then, knock yourself out.
If you were stuck on an island what 3 items do you absolutely need to survive (aside from food, water, clothing, and shelter)?
Darla: Books. My iPad. Solar chargers galore.
