New Neutrals Trend: Here to Stay

Looking for something trendy? Maybe something more sophisticated? Or perhaps something with a timeless quality. What if I told you that you can have all three looks wrapped into one?

Neutral colors are all the rage for 2016 and continues to be popular into 2017. However, there's a twist. In 2017, “new neutrals” are garnering all the attention. To the delight of designers and home décor enthusiasts, there are all kinds of neutral palettes with which to play, including dark, warm, cool, or soft. Out with the old and in with the new neutrals, I say.

1. Think of an updated grey that hasn’t been overdone or a surprisingly dark neutral purple like Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year, Shadow #2117-30. You've probably noticed that dark neutrals are creeping up and saturating the home décor market. Shadow’s deep lush purple gives living spaces an unexpected dark twist compared to your average beige.

2. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2016 consisted of two colors; Rose Quartz and Serenity (last week’s blog touches on this, you can read it here). Following the duo, Greenery came along for 2017 with one of its sister colors, Pale Dogwood #13-1404 TPX. The sister color is more of a subdued version of Rose Quartz, making it the perfect neutral. Looks like this year’s palette is continuing the pink streak.

3. Grey is a modern go-to for neutrals but can get a bit overdone. However, you can switch up your greys by going darker for an edgy, metallic feel. Pair grey with texture to give it an updated look. Have you played with mosaic tiles for your backsplashes? They add both texture and contrast. Check out some shapes and colors here.

4. Taupe was once a vague and forgotten color until it was dug up and given the spotlight it deserves. Sherwin Williams named its Color of the Year 2017 Poised Taupe, and rightly so. This wide spectrum of warm neutrals comes in a variety of color moods. One such mood – a warm greyish brown that lends a velvety feeling to any surface – brings instant class with a dash of comfort to a room.
