5 Gallery Wall Ideas to Hang Up Your Family Photos For the Holidays
    Decor & Design    0 Comments

There’s no better way to start holiday festivities than by decorating! You got your pumpkins, Thanksgiving table setting, and lighting to start, but a surefire way to make your holidays special is to include a gallery wall that showcases what really makes your family what it is. Whether it’s family photos, heirlooms, or your favorite decorations, include these on your gallery wall for the holidays to highlight how special they are.

1 | Wreath Focal Piece

Wreaths are festive and are the perfect way to add holiday/seasonal fun to your gallery wall. There is a wide variety to choose from to match any theme you’re going for. Whatever you choose, you can be sure that wreaths will bring a natural element to your home. You can have the wreath as your focal point and arrange framed photos around it or have the wreath placed above and everything else below. To create a theme with the wreath, choose a main color and material and be consistent throughout your home.

2 | Vintage Family Photos

First of all, vintage family photos rock because they are great conversation starters, create comfy nostalgic vibes, and look amazing. They are a fun way to reminisce about past holidays or vacations everyone had together.

You can hang your family photos up in a gallery style on your living room wall or where the most group activities happen in your home. For a minimal look with a kick of vintage, use black and white photos in white frames on white walls (lots of white, I know). It’s a mashup of old meets new that won’t clash with any of the other decor in your home, so it can be hung from Thanksgiving until Christmas and straight into New Years.

3 | Kids Art Gallery Wall

This is the sweetest idea for decor. You can get your kids involved to turn it into a fun, holiday-themed activity. To incorporate your kids’ art into a gallery wall, frame their masterpieces first, then create a grid to guide your children as to where to place their art (and for you to reference, too). You can create the grid by tracing the frames on paper, cutting them out, and taping them onto the desired place on wall. You can then label each piece of paper to know exactly what goes where.

Also, the more hands-on it is for your kids the better! However, if you don’t trust your little ones with a hammer (like the rest of the world) or you just don’t want to put nail holes on your wall, use 3M command strips to hang the framed artwork. The command strips are strong, won’t leave a mark, and should be able to hold up metal frames as well. If you’re unsure, test the command strip before making a spot for the frame.

4 | Eclectic Heirlooms

Another way to make your family photo gallery wall special is to add family heirlooms or items that are sentimental to you and the family. These items can be anything like a childhood toy, postcards, hand-me-downs, drawings, and anything else that hold special memories for your family. These are great for icebreakers and add an eclectic / vintage feel to your holiday gathering. To bring your nostalgia game to the next level, include a childhood scent like your grandmother’s signature perfume or a candle with a homey scent. You can spray the wall itself, or if there’s a table nearby, place the perfume bottle there for guests to examine.

5 | Holiday Layout

Go hardcore with holiday cheer by creating a gallery wall layout solely dedicated to a holiday theme. You can be as subtle or as bold as you like with this gallery wall, but to help organize your festive decor, have a focal point — so it doesn’t get visually overwhelming. The focus piece should be in the middle or up top and can be the boldest/biggest piece you have of the bunch. The surrounding pieces can definitely be along the same theme with holiday motifs and varied frame size/shapes for visual interest.

Quick Tip: Rounded frames are more rustic and vintage while rectangular frames are more modern, unless they are ornate with vintage designs.

As always, have fun with your gallery wall layout and include whatever you think will make it perfect for you. Let us know which one was your favorite or what else we should include on our list. Go forth and be merry!
