Q: What Is Luxury Vinyl Tile?

A: Luxury Vinyl Tile also referred to as LVT offers a less permanent flooring than wood or porcelain tiles. It is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, stains, dents, and scratches. Homeowners that are looking to add natural patterns and designs at a lower cost, oftentimes opt for LVT’s because of how well they mimic stones, hardwood planks, and natural textures found in wood flooring. Additionally, many LVT’s offer easy “snap and click” features and built-in soundproof padding which makes Luxury Vinyl Tile a desirable material for homeowners and designers.

LVT is so durable it can withstand heavy foot traffic and protects the flooring from pets and spills due to its multiple wear layers. Q: Can Luxury Vinyl Tiles be Installed Over Ceramic Tile?

A: Yes, only if the surface is cleaned, dried, and leveled. While LVT is thick enough to use over existing tiles, some professional tile installers recommend filling in empty spaces or covering larger grout lines. This will ensure your surface is perfectly even when installing LVT in your home. A good rule of thumb when installing LVTs over ceramic tiles is to have a good base. This means you can lay plywood or hardboard to easily flatten the floor.

Q: How Long Will Luxury Vinyl Tile Last?

A: LVT’s can last up to 20 years depending on their thickness. Many manufacturers have different thicknesses for wear layers on LVT products. So it's best to look into the details or consult with the manufacturer for more information about longevity. A standard 8mil-12mil thickness can last about 5 years, whereas 20mil-28mil can last about 20 years. For commercial buildings with heavy foot traffic, interior designers tend to choose 20mil since it is unlikely to break down and has a higher backing content that can last long term.
